Speakeasy regular 8 weeks course: 5주차 과제

 

요즘 『내 언어에 속지 않는 법』의 저자인 Romi 선생님의 영어 강의를 듣고 있다. 

몇 년간 이분의 강의를 듣고 싶었지만 그간은 서울에서 현장 강의만 하셨어서 2018년에 원데이 클래스로 영어 이력서 쓰기 수업을 들어본 것이 처음이자 마지막이었는데, 팬데믹이 발생하면서 수업을 전면 온라인 강의로 전환하셨다고 하여 고민하지 않고 바로 신청했다!

내게 이 수업이 특별하고 매력적인 이유는 매주 정해진 topic으로 에세이를 써서 제출하면 선생님이 1:1로 첨삭하고 잘 된 점과 보완할 점을 실시간으로 말해주신다는 부분이다. 

나처럼 해외 생활을 꿈꾸는 사람도, 그저 한국에서 조금 더 나은 삶을 살고자 영어를 배우기로 마음먹은 사람에게도 영어 에세이 쓰기를 8주간 지속한다면 단순히 문법과 독해, 듣기, (자격증 시험 점수 향상을 위한)문제 풀이 위주로 구성된 수업만으로는 얻기 어려운 것을 배워갈 수 있다. 

 

지난 주 에세이 주제는 '추상적인 개념에 대해 관계대명사를 사용해 자신의 언어로 쓰기'였는데, 나는 선생님이 예시로 들어 주신 'love', 'courage', 'friendship' 같은 심리적인 개념에 대해 서술하는 것이 어렵게 느껴져서 대신 'data-driven approach'를 주제로 택했다. 'meta-cognition'도 마지막까지 고민한 주제인데, 이쪽은 이미 충분히 정립된 학술적 개념이니만큼 남의 글을 참고하다가 너무 많이 베껴오게 될 것 같았다. 그래서 데이터 관련으로 결정. 

 

부끄러운 과제를 공개하는 이유는 데이터 관련으로 짧은 영작을 해본 시도를 기록하고 싶어서. 

분량은 280~290 단어 정도 될 것 같다. 

 

The data-driven approach is a concept used to explain the decision about problem-solving in some disciplines, such as Decision Science and Data Analysis. From routine decisions like selecting a restaurant for a special dinner to determining the department-level financial plan for the coming year, People tend to rely on their preconceptions and prioritize their cognitive biases. In some cases, However, these preconceptions may cause unexpected difficulties for you and your team. Data-driven reasoning would support that you can avoid making fatal mistakes with your own hands.

The data-driven approach is involved in more than just quantitative data analysis. It also includes the interpretation of invisible relationships between many variables. As a result, It is not surprising that data-driven thinking can also assist you in improving your meta-cognition ability. By engaging in data-driven thinking, You can better understand the causal orders and correlations of your questions and approach problems in the real world around us from a more clear perspective.

My personal experience would confirm the significance of data-driven thinking. After my first year as a Korean SAT teacher, I began to doubt a widely held belief that students who choose the liberal art track perform better in Korean and English subjects than students who choose the math and science track. I verified this hypothesis using statistics data published by ‘KICE(*Korean Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation)’, which sponsored the Korean SAT, Suneung. But my students and their parents refused to accept this fact. they mixed up causal orders about their choice and the outcome-their grades. I used to spend my time trying to convince them and correct their misconception that led to the very error, and we were forced to struggle for a long time.

 

초고를 작성한 뒤에 Grammarly와 Quillbot을 활용해 다듬고, 또 어색한 표현은 선생님이 두세 개 고쳐 주시기는 했지만 어쨌든 처음부터 끝까지 내가 완성한 글이라서, 나 자신에게 조금 자랑스러움을 느껴도 될 것 같다. 

 

또 이 과제로 피드백 세션까지 무사히 마치고 이렇게 포스팅을 하다 보니 머릿속이 정리되면서, 내가 시도하고 싶은 영어 글쓰기에 대해 좀더 명쾌한 기준을 떠올릴 수 있었다. 그래서 세 가지로 정리해봤다. 

 

1. 좀더 '영어다운' 문장에 능숙해지기(가주어/사물주어, 분사구문, 시각적 묘사를 활용한 비유 등등)
2. 500단어 이상의 분량으로 한 편의 완결된 에세이를 써 보기 
3. 건조하고 논증을 필요로 하는 주제로 글을 쓰되, 나 자신의 경험이나 감정을 풍부하게 반영하기

 

이 코스의 마지막 주차에는 8주간 배운 것들을 활용해 에세이를 쓰는 기회가 있다.

어떤 글을 써서 내게 될지, 내가 목표로 한 조건들이 충족될지는 아직 모르지만 어떻게 되든 나의 성장 과정일 테니 이 블로그에도 결과물을 가져와보려 한다!
